Green Circles

A climate-neutral HEINEKEN brewery, a sustainable economy, and a pleasant living environment in the region of Zoeterwoude in the Netherlands - these are the ambitions to which Groene Cirkels is dedicating its efforts. It does so by taking nature as its starting point and setting up programmes based around the topics of energy, water, raw materials, mobility, and the environment. The initiative Groene Cirkels, formed by multinational HEINEKEN, the Provincial Government of South Holland, and knowledge partner Wageningen Environmental Research (Alterra), is keen to attract and gain the commitment of parties necessary for the achievement of these ambitions and to set a world-class example.

The power of nature

A sustainable society lives on renewable energy resources and has arranged its material flows into cycles, comparable with a natural ecosystem. Groene Cirkels therefore places ecosystem services at the centre, connecting nature with private and public interests.

In order to create a sustainable region, work needs to be carried out in several areas simultaneously. Groene Cirkels has opted for the strategy of starting small and ending big. The partnership focuses on five topics:

Theme 1: Stimulating sustainable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions
